Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency in an important topic today for several reasons. For many years we have relied on fossil fuels for our energy needs and these fuels are starting to run out and become expensive. Crude oil has been the major driver in terms of fossil fuels, powering everything from our homes and our cars. As this oil starts to dry up in places, oil is becoming less viable in terms of its widespread use among consumers and businesses.

What does being energy efficient mean for you and me? It means that we will have to start thinking about our energy usage more often than we have in the past. For years consumers have driven inefficient petrol powered vehicles that consume large amounts of fuel. When fuel was inexpensive and there was a large supply, it made perfect sense to drive a vehicle like this, but today as this fuel becomes harder to find and more expensive, we need to shift to driving energy efficient cars. This may include purchasing a new hybrid car which is able to run on on partial battery power in addition to the petrol or diesel powered engine.

Another form of energy efficiency includes making our homes energy efficient. This includes changing the light bulbs from regular light bulbs to ones that are more efficient. Replacing an old furnace with a high efficiency furnace is another good move as well and will end up saving you a considerable amount of money in the long term. Even appliances within our homes can be changed and upgraded to new, energy efficient appliances. These will use far less energy than your old appliances which will give you a break on you electricity bill. If each and every home would learn to conserve energy and switch to energy efficient cars and appliances for example, we would have a cleaner environment which is far less dependent on fossil fuels.
